The Dedan Kimathi University of Technology-Centre for Biomass Energy Studies (CBES) is working on a project aimed at improving water and energy resource efficiency and circular production in tea processing in Kenya. The University wishes to advertise for the following vacant positions;

1. Biomass Resources Efficiency Consultant

i.Project Background
Tea processing is energy intensive. To produce a kilogram of made tea, the following quantities of energy are needed: 3.5-6kWh of thermal energy, 0.21-0.5kWh of electrical energy and 0.11kWh of manpower. About 15% of total energy required in tea manufacture is electrical while thermal energy accounts for about 85%. In most of small holder tea factories, due to consumption of high moisture content (>30% on wet basis) wood fuel, the share of thermal energy is a high of 90% and above.

There is an inverse relationship between wood fuel moisture content (MC) and its calorific value (CV). The higher the wood fuel moisture content (MC), the lower the calorific value (CV) and vice versa. Low wood fuel CV means higher wood fuel consumption for the same level of output.
While there are wood fuel seasoning shades in the tea factories, most of them are ineffective and are more of wood storage shades than seasoning shades. CBES proposes development of low-cost high seasoning efficiency fuel wood seasoning shade. The proposed 1000m3 capacity greenhouse tunnel type wood fuel seasoning shade will be constructed of light gauge hollow tubes/black pipe metal, heavy gauge, UV treated polythene cover sheets. It will be equipped with environmental
monitoring parameters such as humidity, wind, and temperature monitors. A digital wood moisture meter will be provided to track wood seasoning progress. A special android-based wood seasoning tracking app will be developed and used to input data and also plot and track the seasoning progress.

This component of the project is meant to demonstrate how seasoning should be carried out and also showcase cheaper and effective alternative to the expensive and less effective seasoning shades in place. Performance data from the project will be shared with other sector players. The ultimate goal will be to see a sector transition to low cost but effective wood fuel seasoning shades.

ii.Expected Deliverables
a) Successfully supervise the development of a 1000m3 wood fuel seasoning shade at a KTDA Tea Factory located near OTHAYA town.
b) Oversee the measurement and tracking of the wood fuel moisture content and environmental indicators (humidity, wind, temperature, and UV) using a specially developed android-based app.
c) Train different cohorts of factory staff on proper construction of wood seasoning shades and effective wood fuel seasoning procedure will be carried out.
d) Analyze and disseminate collected data through progress/status reports, scientific papers, magazines articles, web content and blogs.

iii.Job description
a) Working alongside CBES staff and reporting to the Centre Director, the expert will be expected to.
b) Carry out scoping study of the site (Factory) where the wood fuel seasoning shade will be established.
c) Design/size the fuel wood seasoning shade as per design briefs that will be shared once contracted.
d) Prepare the bill of quantities (BoQ) for the fuel shade.
e) Prepare technical specifications for parts and materials to be procured.
f) Supervise the construction of the fuelwood shade and installation of data capture equipment’s.
g) Prepare a schedule of data to be collected, means of capture, data processing and presentation.
h) Oversee the operationalization/commissioning of the fuel wood shade.
