Duties and Responsibilities

Duties
The Individual Contractor will deliver on this by carrying out the following duties
• The work will involve supporting social and environmental performance of investments in AATIF’s portfolio, evaluating social and environmental risks and impacts as well as supporting impact measurement and reporting along the Fund’s development impact objectives.
• Support preliminary assessment and screening of social and environmental risks and impacts of potential investment opportunities to determine whether any of the activities are part of the exclusion list
• Analyse major social and environmental risks and impacts related to the respective sectors and countries of pipeline projects under considering for financing
• Conduct social and environmental due diligence of potential direct investee companies, intermediary investee companies and financial institutions to determine their level of compliance with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) environmental and social performance standards
• Present key social and environmental issues to the investment committee members as well as the potential development impact of new investment opportunities
• Categorize activities of AATIF potential clients to determine which activities will require further assessment in terms of their level of social and environmental risks and impacts.
• Identify gaps against specific S&E Performance Standards for assigned projects and provide appropriate mitigation measures for risk and impact management
• Identify opportunities for value add in project structure, including providing AATIF clients with guidance in establishing Social and Environmental Management Systems (SEMS) to ensure compliance with the Fund’s Social and Environmental Policy
• Monitor the social and environmental performance of AATIF investments to ensure Action Plans and recommended undertakings are being implemented in accordance with Facility Agreement signed with partner institutions
• Identify major development opportunities aligned with AATIF’s impact measurement framework to make the case for the Fund’s consideration of each investment opportunity
• Analyse monitoring reports and impact reports to prepare impact snapshots of respective partner institutions for publishing in the AATIF website in order to build onto the Fund’s impact trajectory
• Undertake outreach activities; participate in the development of social and environmental training workshops, seminars, sessions etc.; participate in and make presentations on assigned topics/activities
• Identify opportunities for sustainability initiatives and projects by Partner Institutions that could be supported through the Technical Assistance Facility
• Capacity building for AATIF stakeholders and Partner Institutions on the Fund’s social and environmental performance management as well as impact management
• Develop handbook to operationalize AATIF impact spider tool for management of the Fund’s development impact
• Any other duties that may be assigned by the Supervisor in line with the Unit workplan.
• The Individual Contractor will be working under the Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) sub-programme in the Africa Office in UNEP. Working under the supervision of the Regional Coordinator, the Individual Contractor will contribute to Environmental Compliance Advisory to AATIF stakeholders and partners on respective investments along the agricultural value chain in Africa.

Qualifications/special Skills
• A bachelor's degree in Sustainable Development, Environment, Project Management, Natural Resources Management, Economics, Engineering or a related discipline is required.
• A minimum of 5 years' work experience in an international development organization, working in the field of environment and sustainable development related projects is required,
• Experience supporting projects financed by a Development Finance institution (DFI), is desirable
• Ability to analyze and synthesize diverse social and environmental related data and information, is desirable
• A sound understanding of resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production (SCP), is desirable
• Experience supporting projects financed by a Development Finance institution (DFI) is desirable
• Ability to analyze and synthesize diverse social and environmental related data and information, sound understanding of resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) issues in the region including the application of SCP Policy into national planning agendas and application in the business sector and relevant work experience in developing countries, as well as a deep understanding of context in Africa is desirable
• Knowledge of AATIF Social and Environmental Safeguard Guidelines and IFC Environmental and Social Performance Standards is desirable
• Knowledge and experience using international tools on S&E management such as Global Map of Environmental and Social Risks in Agro-Commodity Production (GMAP) and IRIS+ system, experience in reporting on sustainable financial disclosure in compliance with international regulations such as SFDR, strong project management experience and planning, liaison and organization skills; initiative to identify alternatives ahead of project challenges, communications experience, particularly with outreach, presentation, and coordination at various stakeholder levels are desirable
