Eldoret is an up-country market town, population approximately 500,000 situated at an altitude of 2,103m above sea level on the Uasin Gishu Plateau, some 200 miles North-west of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city. The surrounding landscape is predominantly agricultural (wheat, maize and dairy cattle) and the town’s ambience reflects this, although in the last few years other types of industry have been encouraged, and Eldoret now has factories producing cotton goods, knitwear and suitings, among others.
The climate of Eldoret must be one of the most agreeable in the world. One rainy season (April – September) is broken by the reasonably dry month of August. Daytime temperatures over this period average 16-18C (60-64F) and evenings can be cool enough for an open fire. From October to April the weather is clear, bright and sunny, with a mean temperature of 24C (76F). The average rainfall is 1016mm (40″) per year.
Lakes Bogoria and Baringo (two of the Great Rift Lakes) Bogoria boasting hot springs and flamingoes, Baringo offering a wealth of birdlife. – are within two hours drive of Eldoret; Lake Turkana (formerly Lake Rudolf) is an easy five-hour drive away; all have residential lodges for visitors. Kisumu, on the shores of Lake Victoria, is easily accessible. Main roads to other large towns in the area are also all-weather tarmac. Eldoret has an airstrip for private and small commercial planes, as well as an International Airport with a twice daily air service to/from Nairobi, and the flying time to Eldoret is 55 minutes.
Eldoret Club is situated in beautiful grounds ‘on the outskirts of the town, on what was once farmland. There is an excellent Clubhouse, with full bar and restaurant services; 24 cottage type double bedrooms; tennis courts, squash court, badminton court, swimming pool, gymnasium and sauna. A well designed nine-hole golf course is an added attraction and challenge.
The Club has a resident Secretary/Manager, and a membership of approximately 1200, drawn from all walks of professional and business life. .
