Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya and New York, NY that combats urban poverty and gender inequity in the slums of Nairobi. Kennedy Odede, who grew up in the Kibera slum, founded SHOFCO in 2004 with a focus on youth and gender empowerment.

Diagnostic Radiographer – Ultrasonography

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  • Receiving of patients for various Ultrasound procedures and exercising a high degree of customer care by explaining the ultrasound procedure to patients and answering any questions they may have.
  • Reviewing patients and interpreting clinical requirements to determine appropriate radiographic technique
  • Perform a range of abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology sonographic examinations as requested according to the requirements of the referring clinician/ physician.
  • Performing the ultrasound ensuring the transducer (probe) is capturing images of every angle/section that must be assessed and ensuring the images are of best quality.
  • Ensure radiation protection to patients and staff to produce high-quality images.
  • Managing referrals to ensure patients receive a radiation dose as low as reasonably possible and safely supervising visiting staff and patients in radiation work areas.
  • Enabling high quality patient experience including quality of care and optimal turnaround time Facilitating adherence to set standard for routine and special examinations.
  • Producing images of high diagnostic quality.
  • Performing routine and special radiological examinations including mobile ultrasonography when required.
  • Maintaining the ultrasound equipment and maintaining orderliness in the room in which the procedure takes place.

Academic Qualifications

Diploma in radiology and higher diploma in Ultrasonography from a recognised institution in Kenya

Professional Qualifications

  • Must have a valid practicing license from the Kenya Nuclear regulatory authority.
  • At least 3 years experience conducting Ultrasonography in a busy set up.
  • Ability to operate an ultrasound machine

Health Records and Information Officer (HRIO)

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  • Provide quality and timely health information.
  • Ensure disclosure, confidentiality, security and exchange of health records and information.
  • Collect, compile and store health information data from the facility.
  • Process, examine and summarize the data into meaningful weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Conduct on – job training for other staff/mentorships in the facility.
  • Identify gaps and suggest ways of improving records and sharing of program data.
  • Design and review monitoring and evaluation tools used by the program sectors.
  • Convert hardcopy data into the system.
  • Interpret and disseminate data to relevant stakeholders.
  • Compile bio-data for patients.
  • Trouble shoot and maintain health systems.

Academic Qualifications

  • Diploma or above in Medical Records Information Technology, preferably from KMTC.

Other requirements (unique/job specific)

  • At least 2 years’ working experience in a busy health care facility,(experience in working with Hospital Management Information System will be an added advantage).
  • Knowledge of SHOFCO policies and personal contribution to the realization of the program targets/plans.

Clinical Officer

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  • Offer health care services to patients by taking history, examining patients, carry out investigations, prescribe treatment, follow-up of patients, and give health education talks.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts and other pertinent information.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Guide and counsel patients, clients, and staff on health issues.
  • Respond to enquiries relating to patients, lab requests, x-rays, prescription requests, etc.
  • Coordinate appointments for specialist referrals, x-rays, lab tests, etc. and convey pertinent instructions and information to the patient.
  • Attend to clinical care centres patients and manage opportunistic infections.
  • Conduct continuous medical education and health educations as may be required.
  • Work with other team members and staff of other cadres in ensuring quality service provision.
  • Be accountable for any equipment assigned and report to the line manager as may be required.
  • Collect data and compile clinical reports.
  • Collect and compile data for research on clinical services.
  • Undergo coaching by more experienced clinical officers to achieve professional competences.
  • Apply the SHOFCO’s health standard treatment and patient management.

Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Medicine and Community Health or Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.

Professional Qualifications

  • Registered clinical officer preferably trained at KMTC.
  • Registration with clinical officer’s council with Current Practicing license is mandatory.

Other requirements (unique/job specific)

  • 3 years’ experience in a busy health facility.
  • Basic HIV training / experience.
  • Ability to: Take medical history of the patient, perform a thorough physical examination, order appropriate investigations, make correct diagnosis, prescribe and treat and Do patient follow-up.

Nurse

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  • Assess patients’ general condition to determine patient care.
  • Support Clinical Officer as required during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
  • Ensure that all required observations, prescribed treatment and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient’s charts.
  • Prepare equipment and ensure examination rooms are clean and stocked with required supplies and materials.
  • Refer to the Clinical Officer relevant information such as patient’s status and laboratory results, which would assist in proper clinical management.
  • Participate in community health surveys/campaigns and in training of community health workers.
  • Administer prescribed medications, injections and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Act as a link between clients and different program areas to include CCC, ANC, PNC, nutrition, family planning.
  • Conduct follow up home visits for clients with special cases.
  • Work together with CHW and social worker to reach out to missed appointments and defaulters.
  • Ensure timely and correct, timely data entry and completeness of data tools to include; prophylaxis, ART, PMTCT, HEI, TB, IPT and any other relevant tool.
  • Co-ordinate client support groups.
  • Co-ordinate timely reporting and ordering of supplies.
  • Maintain high quality of service provision including patient confidentiality.
  • Conduct CME’s and feedback after internal/external trainings.

Academic Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in  Nursing, Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse

Professional Qualifications

  • Valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya

Counselling Psychologist

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  • Provide counselling/psychotherapy services to clients drawn from the health department
  • Interview, take case history, conduct psychological tests, and/or observational techniques and document relevant data
  • Prepare and implement treatment plans, and follow-up care programs for all clients at the Clinic
  • Provides therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as and when required.
  • Follow up/evaluate the reliability and validity of treatment plans/approaches and make recommendations to enhance the same.
  • Partner/Consult with other therapists and related professionals, as appropriate in the performance of therapeutic and/or casework;
  • Review client data and prepare individualized cases/clients for follow up, referral and/or discharge as required.
  • Participate in the identification, review and development of clinical issues, program policies and procedures.
  • Participate in, lead, and/or coordinate training sessions and workshops to enhance mental health awareness and treatment skills.
  • Liaises with appropriate teams including the social work, HIV/TB, Nutrition clinic, Maternal child health, GBV and outpatient departments hosting clients requiring mental health services in the program
  • Conduct meaningful support group activities for clients on counselling across sites.

Academic Qualifications

  • Degree in counselling Psychology from a recognised university.

Professional Qualifications

  • Must be registered with the Kenya counselling and psychologivcal association
  • At least 2 years’ hands on experience in counselling in a busy set up
  • Addiction and counselling training
  • Psychological first aid training

Lab Technologist

Key Responsibilities and Job Dimensions

  • Prepare the laboratory equipment and specimens for tests.
  • Prepare clients for specimens’ collection.
  • Receive, collect, label and register patients’ specimens.
  • Undertake quality control measures on working reagents to ensure conformity with set norms and standards.
  • Prepare, store and ensure availability and optimum utilization of reagents.
  • Document all processes and results to ensure availability of supportive information and give reports on the same.
  • Implement all set stock control procedures to ensure accountability.
  • Maintain high standards in good laboratory practice, laboratory safety, and laboratory hygiene.
  • Process and analyse specimens for special techniques including viral load and CD4 counts.
  • Write, record and verify results.
  • Ensure superior customer experience to all internal and external community members.
  • Management and maintenance scheduling of Laboratory equipment.

Academic Qualifications

  1. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution by KMLTTB.

Professional Qualifications

  • Registered member of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technician and Technologists
    Board.
  • A certificate in computer applications from a recognised institution
