Animal Health Technicians Grade, KIP 9

VACANCY No. KIP/AHT 9/2025:

For appointment to this grade, a Candidate MUST have:

  • K.C.S.E certificate or equivalent from a recognized Institution;
  • Diploma in Animal Science, Animal Health, Animal Husbandry, Conservation Biology, Animal Ecology, Community Conservation, Biomedical research, environmental conservation or equivalent from a recognized Institution;
  • Membership to Kenya Veterinary Board;
  • Proficiency in computer applications;
  • and fulfill the requirement of Chapter Six of the constitution.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Performing daily husbandry (watering, feeding etc), care, restraint and observation of laboratory animals in routine and experimental programs, under supervision of a senior officer;
  • Providing technical assistance in the clinical care of laboratory animals and collection of routine clinical and experimental data, under supervision of a senior officer;
  • Organizing and segregating animals according to sex and breeding needs;
  • Assisting in ensuring animal housing standards remain responsive to needs of the animals;
  • Assisting in ensuring proper transport and storage of laboratory animal samples and biobanking;
  • Assisting in maintaining and reporting the welfare of laboratory animals as per national and international standards;
  • Ensuring general cleanliness/sanitation of the animal houses/cages and surrounding environment;
  • Ensuring proper disposal of animal waste as per the waste management and disposal guidelines;
  • Assisting in maintaining an inventory of animal species;
  • Assisting in maintaining an inventory of animal feeds and other supplies for the animal house;
  • Assisting in ensuring proper breeding cycles of animals;
  • Making the animals available according to researchers’ needs;
  • Liaising with the researchers regarding their animal research needs;
  • Managing the infrastructural, operational, facility management, maintenance, and logistics coordination of research facilitation at the established institutional field site;
  • In collaboration with research scientists support the field research station operations, logistical coordination of the implementation of field project activities at the site;
  • Providing the necessary basic needs for researchers at the field research station for smooth implementation of projects;
  • Supervising junior staff.
